Taigh Iain and Taigh Sheumais

Our two cottages look out onto a beautiful vista of sea and mountains and are both private from each other. Both are tucked into their very own part of the hillside and both take in equally spectacular views. Taigh Iain (translating to John’s House) and Taigh Sheumais (James’ House) are both built using traditional means. The cottages are unique in their design with a turf roof which aesthetically blends into the hillside. The idea is based on Neolithic housing, which was situated underground. Along with a touch of traditional Hebridean building techniques, this has resulted in a unique design with exclusive features.

Lift the turf on the hill and slip a home underneath it

The cottages were brought to life through the inspiration of local architect Stuart Bagshaw. The concept behind this project was simple – lift the turf on the hill and slip a home underneath it! This is a smart design because it means the hill itself shelters the cottages from the prevailing Atlantic wind whilst also offering insulation throughout the year. So in essence, it looks from the outside like the cottages are organically growing out of the landscape.

Testimonials

This location is simply stunning, and the cottages do it justice. On sunny days, the floor-to-ceiling windows offer delightful panoramic views of Ceapabhal, Taransay and the North Harris Mountains: on rainy days, the views are as spectacular, as you enjoy a grandstand view of the weather arriving from the North Atlantic.

On a sunny day, you can sit outside and relax; on a wide day, there are always the sauna and whirlpool bath. It is an amazingly relaxing location that we love, and the owners are always available to advise on the locality, including whether the local scallop diver has been able to harvest or the langoustine and lobster fishermen able to collect their pots.

This is a great location: we love walking (and eating) our way around the islands, but golf, kayaking, sea swimming are all possible nearby.

We have already booked to return.
